Old Herbaceous looks back on his life as a head gardener.
Personal Thoughts:
Old Herbaceous, Herb for most of the book, turns out to be an interesting old man. He starts out the book getting recognized (and side-eyed) for his creativity and imagination in a flower arrangement.
We follow him through middle age where he works to embrace the greenhouse and learns how to use it to his advantage. He even surprises his headmistress with early flowers.
And he ends his life in a similar way the head gardener he first worked for ended his – kind of stuck in his ways and submitting to the whims of his superiors.
The ending was very sweet and very realistic. Old Herbaceous was a steady character who was rewarded for his lack of drama at the end of the book.
There was nothing too crazy, no big plot hooks to grab onto, but it was a lovely trollop through the life of a committed gardener.
