π The Definition of a Clean, Cozy Read
I have really been in the mood recently for low-stakes enjoyable reads that still have great writing and intriguing characters. Goodness, did this book hit that sweet spot for me.
There is no politics system to learn, no long list of side characters to keep track of, and no extra drama for the sake of drama.
There are some legal matters that add to the plot, and the occasional word to look up (it wouldnβt be a Golden novel without those)βjust enough intellectual intrigue to keep my attention.
It was so easy to settle in and let the story take over. I didnβt have to force myself to read through any scene in this book.
ππ Mature Characters Growing Toward Each Other
By the time we meet Phoebe in this book, it seems she has already gone through some significant growth in her life.
The story that unfolds is a result of her past choices and her current efforts to escape societyβfor a couple of reasons.
Graeme is a lovable academic type of character with a quick wit and a propensity to deal with other humans in as fair a way as possible. His was an excellent character, and he suited Phoebe wonderfully.
While the characters didnβt have much personal growth to go through, they did grow toward each other in a gradual and satisfying way.
Donβt get me wrong, the book was not void of misunderstandings and miscommunication. But both characters were willing to admit when they were wrong and worked to make amends without making excuses. This maturity is sorely lacking in many clean romances today.
π€― Twists and a Bit of Mystery
Here we are at one of my favorite aspects of this book. Graeme was a mysterious man trying to solve a bit of a mystery himself. We got to see glimpses of who he might be along the way; and we got to watch Graeme and Phoebe uncover the secrets of the Earl of Collumby.
The discovered answers and reveals at the end were highly satisfying. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book.
